Clearly, there's no channa-batura like Cream Centre's channa-batura. After all, Chennaiites actually design to line up outside this restaurant on especially busy days just for their plates of steaming, flavouring some channa served with over-sized golden-brown baturas. So it;s hardly surprising that they've just opened their second outlet on College Road, replacing Bombay Blues, which flailed about desperately at this location for roughly a year before finally calling it quits and moving out. And Sanjiv Chona, Managing Director of this chain, which originated in Mumbai about 50 years ago, says they are currently looking for their third location.
Cream Centre, which has been opened in association with Chennai restauranteur M. Mahadevan, was inaugurated on Sunday by MP Kanimozhi with an auction to raise money for charity. As crowds bustled in and out of the restaurant, they alternated between snacking on crisp nachos smothered lavishly with warm, melted cheese and pledging money in a discreet notebook that was doing the rounds. The potrait of Mother Teresa, by M. F. Husain, was sold for a Rs. 1.5 lakh, and the guests donated another Rs. 1.5 lakh, raising a total of Rs. 3 lakh for the Stri Arunodayam Charitable Trust, a home for mentally challenged destitute children.
